Let's Prevent and Relieve Constipation in Pregnant Women

Constipation in pregnant women is a common thing. The increase in the hormone progesterone that occurs in pregnant women can be one possible cause. Constipation in pregnant women can be prevented by increasing the intake of fiber, water, and exercise. The hormone progesterone which is increased during pregnancy has the effect of relaxing the smooth muscles throughout the body, including in the digestive tract. Thus, the intestine will move more slowly and absorb more water. This is what causes constipation. In addition, the uterus that enlarges and suppresses the intestine, low-fiber diet, and consumption of blood-boosting drugs also contribute to making pregnant women constipated. If not treated, constipation over time can also cause hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

Preventing and Overcoming Constipation in Pregnant Women

Constipation can be prevented by regulating diet and lifestyle, such as the following:
  • Consumption of foods high in fiber

  • Fiber is considered effective in preventing or relieving constipation because it has two benefits, namely speeding up the work of the digestive system and making stool softer. Fiber can be obtained from vegetables, nuts, fruits, whole grains, and whole grains. Make sure you consume 25-30 grams of fiber per day.
  • Drink enough water

  • When the intestine moves more slowly, this one organ absorbs more water so the stool becomes harder. Therefore, the need for adequate body fluids is very important to prevent constipation in pregnant women. It is recommended for those of you who are pregnant to drink 8-12 glasses of water per day. Avoid caffeine because caffeine can increase urine volume and even make dehydration.
  • Sports

  • Apart from fiber consumption and fulfilling body fluid needs, regular physical activity can also help prevent constipation in pregnant women. Mild exercise, such as walking or swimming for 20-30 minutes every day three times a week is considered sufficient for pregnant women. However, it is advisable to consult with a doctor about safe physical activity carried out during pregnancy.
  • Anticipate iron side effects

  • Pregnant women need more intake of iron and folic acid to maintain pregnancy and prevent anemia. However, blood booster supplements in the form of iron can cause side effects of constipation and discomfort in the digestive tract. To overcome this problem, pregnant women can consult an obstetrician to get the best advice and choice of suitable blood booster supplements to prevent constipation.
  • Take probiotics

  • Probiotics are beneficial body bacteria found in food. Probiotics can facilitate digestion and reduce bad bacteria in the intestines. These good bacteria are considered safe for consumption during pregnancy. Therefore, probiotics can be an option to help relieve constipation and diarrhea in pregnant women. Probiotics can be obtained by consuming yogurt and drinks containing probiotics.
If the methods above have not been successful, it is advisable to see a gynecologist. Pregnant women are not recommended to take any drugs or supplements without consulting a doctor first.
